Home Affairs to continue smart ID card roll-out

JOHANNESBURG - Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba says his department will continue the roll-out of dedicated offices to handle smart ID cards across the country.
Gigaba handed over the Maponya Mall Home Affairs Smart ID Card Dedicated Office in Soweto earlier today.
He said the department has so far opened 70 dedicated smart card offices and another 70 will be opened before the end of the financial year.
The minister said the facilities will help communities apply for the new documents.
"At the moment, only first time applicants and those who are above 60-years-old have been asked to come and apply for their documents and their applications are free."
Smart identity cards, will replace the green bar-coded identity books and were rolled out to first-time applicants and pensioners from February.
The Department of Home Affairs said the roll-out will take a few years and has asked people to be patient.
