Countdown to Medupi launch begins
After many delays, Eskom has finally begun the countdown to the Medupi Power Station coming online.
The station, which is the first to be built by the power utility in 20 years, is being constructed near Lephalale in the Limpopo Province.
It's expected to ease pressure on the national power grid.
After numerous delays in its construction, the Medupi Power Plant is on track to meet its deadline.
Eskom's Andrew Etzinger says although it will take several months for the unit to reach full and stable power, they are excited about its launch.
"Eskom is very excited to announce the 100-day countdown to the synchronisation of the first generator and our new Medupi Power Station. Of course this is a major milestone for not only Eskom but the whole country."
The power plant is expected to be synchronised at midday on Christmas Eve.
The synchronisation involves a generator being connected to the power grid so that its power is aligned with all the other generators.
