JOHANNESBURG - More than 100 people have been displaced following shack fires at an informal settlement in Denver, south-eastern Johannesburg.

Emergency services officials were called to the area on Saturday evening where more than 40 households were found to be affected.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at the moment and no injuries have been reported.

There have however been reports of an altercation between residents and firefighters on the scene.

Johannesburg Emergency Services' Nana Radebe says frustrated residents allegedly attacked officials who were there to extinguish the blaze.

"People wanted to rescue their belongings, they wanted to take the hoses and fight the fire themselves because they didn't think the firefighters were fast enough."
