JOHANNESBURG - A taxi driver was shot and killed at the Noord Street taxi rank in downtown Johannesburg.

Police say a man in a red car approached the driver this morning and fired several shots before fleeing the scene.

Two women were also wounded and rushed to hospital.

A witness describes how the man was gunned down.

"They shot the taxi driver apparently in an Iveco taxi. It's chaos now as people can't use taxis here to get out of the taxi rank. There are police surrounding the taxi rank."

The police's Doniah Mothutlane says, "Eight cartridges were found on the scene and there has been no arrest yet. A murder case will be opened at the Johannesburg Central Police station.

Police say calm has been restored and taxis are operating as usual.
