CAPE TOWN - South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chairperson Ellen Tshabalala's qualifications will be investigated by Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications.

The committee decided to launch the probe yesterday after Tshabalala failed to provide proof of the BCom she claims she holds from the University of South Africa.

If Tshabalala is found to have misled the committee, it could recommend to President Jacob Zuma that she be relieved of her post.

But Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament (MP) Gavin Davis says the university has told him it has no record of her qualification.

The SABC board chair was supposed to provide the committee with proof of her qualification last month but wrote to Chairperson Joyce Moloi-Moropa, saying she'd lost a bag containing them and hadn't been able to get copies.

The committee meets again on Tuesday to plot its way forward and could ask for Tshabalala to be suspended while the inquiry is underway.
