JOHANNESBURG - The Congress of the People (Cope) says recent allegations that Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) spy must be proved before it is simply stated in public.

Deputy Defence Minister Kebby Maphatsoe has launched an attack on the Public Protector, saying she is working for the CIA and is undermining the ANC to create a puppet regime for the United States.

Maphatsoe was addressing hundreds of people at the unveiling of a tombstone for former Umkhonto we Sizwe combatant Linda Jabane in Soweto at the weekend.

Cope's Dennis Bloem says these allegations are unjustified.

"It's not the first time that this deputy minister is making such reckless statements. We are calling on him to come forward with evidence and proof of his allegations. If he can't then we call upon the president to remove him from his position."
