JOHANNESBURG - Limpopo police have confirmed the former mayor of the Waterberg District Municipality has been shot and wounded in a scuffle at the municipal offices in Mokopane.

Eric Gwangwa was shot in the back during an illegal march yesterday.

Police say residents forced their way through a locked gate at the offices and the scuffle broke out.

Gwangwa has been hospitalized and is in a serious condition.

It's understood the mayor was among the protesters who marched on the municipality yesterday.

The police's Hangwani Mulaudzi says six people were arrested.

"We're trying to find out exactly what happened because there are conflicting reports."

It's believed the former mayor was shot near the council chamber where a special meeting was under way.
