Police search for JHB mall robbers
Police are searching for two groups of criminals who robbed two malls in one day.
JOHANNESBURG - Police are searching for two groups of armed men who robbed Maponya Mall and a cellphone shop at the Northgate Mall in separate incidents on Monday.
It's understood the group approached two security guards at Maponya Mall who were carrying two bags of cash from a store.
Authorities say a shot was fired but no one was hurt.
The police's Lungelo Dlamini says, "The suspects the cash and as they were leaving, one of the suspect fired a shot and they escaped in a grey vehicle. Unfortunately, nobody managed to get the registration of the car."
At the same time, police say no arrests have yet been made following a robbery at a cellphone shop at the Northgate Mall.
Shoppers as well as mall security were oblivious as to what had happened until staff from the store pushed a panic button after the men had left.
Police say the two men managed to gain entry and leave the store without any commotion.
"They allegedly held up the employees and manager with a firearm. They went to the back of the store and took a substantial amount of money as well as cellphones."
Police say no shots were fired during the robbery and no one was injured.
Meanwhile, Gauteng residents have expressed concern about the recent spate of robberies at shopping centres across Gauteng.
Fears are growing of shopping in malls knowing that criminals can strike at any time.
Police say suspects managed to get away with hundreds of thousands of rands worth of stock.
