CAPE TOWN - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has weighed in on the public fracas between Public Protector Thuli Madonsela and the African National Congress (ANC) over President Jacob Zuma.

A spat involving Madonsela and the African National Congress (ANC) turned ugly this week, with the ruling party demanding the Public Protector reveal the name of the politician she claims leaked a seven-page letter she penned to the president.

In a statement, Tutu and his daughter Mpho warn maligning Madonsela besmirches not only the ruling party, but the entire country, adding they are proud South Africa has an institution such as the Public Protector's office.

They say the contempt being shown towards Madonsela by the ANC underlines the slippery moral slope the country has descended since the days of hope under former President Nelson Mandela.

The pair have applauded Madonsela's courage.
