CAPE TOWN - Parliament's Public Spending watchdog, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) wants answers from the National Treasury as to why its officials failed to appear for a meeting of the committee.

The committee was on Wednesday to consider more than a billion rands overspending by the Departments of Trade and Industry, Home Affairs and the Presidency.

The meeting had to be adjourned.

Scopa chairperson Themba Godi says he wants an explanation.

"We obviously expect that there should be an explanation from the national treasury. They haven't done that, they are not delinquent, they are always with us. So I think we will definitely follow that up with them."

The National Treasury has yet to respond to an EWN request for comment.
