Forget walking on water, CPT daredevil will walk underwater
Matt Silver-Vallance is designing a vehicle to walk underwater from Robben Island to Blouberg beach.
JOHANNESBURG - Daredevil Matt Silver-Vallance is planning to walk on the ocean floor from Robben Island to the mainland.
Several years ago Silver-Vallance drifted across the bay from Robben Island to Blouberg beach using helium-filled balloons.
Speaking to 567 Cape Talk's Kieno Kammies on Friday morning, the daredevil said his team was designing a vehicle to allow him to walk underwater for 68 hours, the expected duration of the trip.
"There's a big team behind me and this project is more complex than the last one. We've done a bathometric survey which is an extremely high resolution by mapping of the ocean floor," Silver-Vallance explained.
He said the South African Council for Geoscience have already done the research so there are no obstacles that are unavoidable.
"We have to dodge a couple of walls. The next step is to analyse the currents because we'll be walking slowly so we need to know if a side current will occur so we don't drift into the wrong place."
Asked how the underwater car works, thrill-seeking Silver-Vallance said it would use technology called rebreathe, that was developed over 20 years and recycles the air you breathe.
He was confident the vehicle would have enough oxygen to allow him make the journey.
He added that he wasn't worried about getting attacked by any sea predators.
"We're not worried about sharks because they attack from underneath and we'll be walking on the sea ground."
The daredevil added that the aim of the stunt is to enable people to go explore the underwater with the vehicle one day.
He plans to make the journey on 27 April 2016.
Silver-Vallance will stream video of the journey via real time connectivity.
