JOHANNESBURG -Tshediso Matona has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (COO) of Eskom.

Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown made the announcement in Cape Town a short while ago.

Brown sang Matona's praises in Parliament this afternoon.

"Matona has been involved in providing oversight to Eskom and the other companies in the department's portfolio for the past three years."

She says Matona is both experienced and familiar with the challenges facing the parastatal.

Matona, who also served as Director General of Trade and Industry, cut his teeth in government as a trade negotiator in Geneva at the World Trade Organisation.

Matona takes over from Collin Matjila who was appointed shortly after Brian Dames stepped down.

After a 26-year career at the parastal and four years as CEO, Dames resigned in December, as pressure mounted over the escalating budget and perpetual delays at the Medupi Power Plant.

Dames was appointed CEO of Eskom Holdings on 1 July, 2010.
