CAPE TOWN - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has met with Communications Minister Faith Muthambi to discuss the controversial permanent appointment of South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Chief Operating Officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

The public protector's spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi says, "The meeting followed the subpoena that was served on the minister in connection with the alleged irregular appointment of Motsoeneng."

Madonsela subpoenaed Muthambi earlier this month after she pressed ahead with Motsoeneng's appointment despite promising Parliament she would act on Madonsela's report.

The protector's report stated that Motsoeneng committed fraud by lying about his matric qualification.

Her investigation also showed that Motsoeneng received three appraisals which increased his salary from R1.5 million to R2.4 million a year.

Madonsela has urged the SABC to take remedial action including removing Motsoeneng from the post.

The Western Cape High Court heard today that recent tendencies to acquire second opinions that differ to reports by Madonsela are nothing more than ploys to undermine the work of the Chapter Nine institution.

The Democratic Alliance approached the court to set aside Motsoeneng's permanent appointment.

Madonsela's legal representative, Etienne Labuschagne, says despite many second guessing the work of her office, it's there to curb abuse of power and maladministration.

Labuschagne was referring to notions that remedial action tabled in the public protector's report was nothing more than recommendations.

He told the court that the recommendations are binding.
