Court shooting: Suspects still on the run

JOHANNESBURG - The justice department has confirmed the two men who shot their way out of the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Tuesday were scheduled to appear on nine counts of armed robbery.

But Nchabeleng Mahlatse and Lucky Segopo now also face attempted murder charges, for shooting and wounding two policemen.

Court F on the third floor has been declared a crime scene, where Mahlatse and Segopo shot two policemen, one of them at point-blank range in the head.

Brooklyn police arrested the pair at the weekend for a string of robberies.

The department's Mthunzi Mhaga wants to know how they obtained the firearm.

"We hope that law enforcement is going to move swiftly to investigate."

A woman has told Eyewitness News one of the men produced a firearm inside the courtroom.

"[He] went back in, shot both individuals and ran out. They then went outside, hijacked a car and sped off."

The police say the two abandoned that car in Atteridgeville but then hijacked a red Polo.

They remain on the run.
