Govt to address EC school furniture issue
EWN found some schools in the EC operate without infratructure, furniture and resources.
JOHANNESBURG - The Basic Education Department says it is building new schools in the Eastern Cape and providing adequate equipment and furniture.
Eyewitness News visited the province after President Jacob Zuma promised in his State of the Nation Address (Sona) in June to provide all schools in the Eastern Cape with furniture by the middle of this month.
But some Eastern Cape schools are still without furniture.
The education department says it has put systems in place to urgently address the situation in Eastern Cape schools.
The department's Elijah Mhlanga says the provision of furniture to schools in the province is an ongoing process.
"In terms of providing decent furniture, as we speak, on a daily basis there are deliveries that are happening."
Equal Education's Nombulelo Natyela says they will continue monitoring the situation.
"In that time much schools will be eradicated, particularly in the Eastern Cape."
The department has promised to deliver new equipment and furniture to schools as soon as possible.
