Spy boss launches probe into alleged rogue staff
A rogue spy unit is allegedly operating within the State Security Agency.
JOHANNESBURG - State Security Minister David Mahlobo has now asked the Inspector General of Intelligence, advocate Faith Radebe, to investigate claims of a rogue spy unit within the State Security Agency.
Weekend newspapers reported that the unit had been supporting former Police Crime Intelligence Unit Head Richard Mdluli and had tried to get convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti involved in cigarette smuggling.
Mahlobo says the agency must remain accountable and conduct itself within the spirit of the constitution and the law.
Mahlobo's spokesperson Brian Dube says, "It will seek to establish the facts around this particular story and ensure that the minister is able to exercise his duty of ensuring that all intelligence work is conducted in terms of the law and the constitution and therefore allows him to take the necessary steps to deal with any wrongdoing, should such be found."
