The Communications Minister must account for her appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

JOHANNESBURG - The public protector says Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has agreed to meet with her to explain the permanent appointment of SABC Chief Operations Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Advocate Thuli Madonsela subpoenaed Muthambi earlier this month after the communications minister pressed ahead with Motsoeneng's appointment despite promising Parliament she would act on Madonsela's report.

The public protector found that Motsoeneng lied about his qualifications and irregularly increased his salary three times in one year.

Madonsela says Muthambi has also been summoned to Parliament and will appear there first.

"The minister responded and indicated that she's been summoned to Parliament on the same day that we subpoenaed her and that she's willing to come if we can just arrange an alternative day. We've now asked her to come on the 20th."

Madonsela says the SABC and the minister failed to act on a simple request from her office.

"I asked them to do a simple thing - give me an action plan. To this date I do not have that action plan. But we do know they have proceeded to do it. So that should not have happened if we all understand what the Constitution says."
