CAPE TOWN - A Northern Cape Court has ordered a teenager who murdered a family of three to undergo intensive rehabilitation.

Deon Steenkamp, his wife Christel and their 14-year-old daughter Marthella were shot dead on their Griekwastad farm on Good Friday two years ago.

The teenager was also found guilty of raping Marthella and lying to the police.

In delivering the sentence, Judge Frans Kgomo said the teen must be a man and face the consequences of his crime.

The teen was sentenced to 20 years for each murder, 12 years for rape and four years for defeating the ends of justice.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kgomo labelled the teen as a very "poor witness".

The state claimed the accused was alone when he attacked the Steenkamp family on their farm.

COMMUNITY 'RELIEVED' BY SENTENCING

The author of The Griekwastad Murders says he believes the community is relieved following Wednesday's sentencing.

Author Jacques Steenkamp says the murders created a massive rift in the small community.

"I'm sure the community are relieved because they were very much divided. A lot of community members couldn't believe that this boy murdered a family."
