JOHANNESBURG - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says anyone who has lied to the country about their qualifications, including South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng, must have the courage to apologise like Pallo Jordan did.

Earlier this year the Public Protector found Motsoeneng had lied about his qualifications after it emerged that he did not have a matric certificate, as stated on his curriculum vitae.

This week Jordan, an African National Congress (ANC) stalwart, resigned from Parliament after it emerged he did not obtain a doctorate, as he'd previously claimed.

Madonsela has commended Jordan for being bold enough to admit that he'd made a mistake and has referred to Motsoeneng when saying leaders have to admit when they've made an error, no matter how embarrassing the situation.

"Don't cause society to waste further resources in holding you to account. Just have Pallo Jordan's courage to step up and say, 'I was wrong'."

She says leaders must lead by example.

"You're going to look terrible in the moment but in years to come, we'll look up to you as a moral authority again and as a courageous person."

The Public Protector says it's now up to South Africans to decide whether to forgive Jordan or not.
