Bi-elections: IEC to monitor Mossel Bay
The IEC says it will monitor polling stations in Mossel Bay where by-elections are set to take place.
CAPE TOWN - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Western Cape says officials are closely monitoring polling stations in the Mossel Bay area, where by-elections are set to take place.
Disgruntled residents set a municipal building alight, damaged cars and vandalised traffic lights.
The IEC's provincial head Courtney Sampson says, "We haven't had any reports of any incidents at this stage. The voting stations are up and running. We have been keeping a close eye on that and we've been working very closely with the South African Police Service."
To date, 30 people have been arrested following overnight protests.
The police's Malcolm Pojie says, "We've reinforced our deployment this morning. We arrested people again for public violence. The situation is currently calm and no incidents have been reported. We're monitoring the situation closely."
