JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have called on the public to turn over a suspect who allegedly killed three-year-old Curburne van Wyk, as angry residents continue to search Reiger Park in Boksburg for the man.
Van Wyk was kidnapped while playing outside his family home last Wednesday, apparently by a man known to the community as 'Chicken'.
The toddler's partially burnt body was discovered on a mine dump at the weekend.
His father Elroy Peterson says his son could not have been kidnapped by a stranger.
"He doesn't go around with people that he doesn't know. He only went with people that he did know and the guy that he went with, he knew. And that guy knew my girlfriend. At the end of the day, why did he do this?"
Little Curburne's teacher Cindy Phillips says the three-year-old was friendly to everyone.
"He was very talkative and liked to tell stories. And he liked to complain about everything, that's what made me love him so much."
Gauteng Premier David Makhura, who visited the family on Monday, has urged the community to work with the police, to try and trace the suspect but not to take the law into their own hands.
