Shark attack victim to make full recovery
Matthew Smithers sustained multiple lacerations to his legs after he was attacked by a shark while surfing.
CAPE TOWN - A surfer who was bitten by a great white shark at Muizenberg beach has been discharged from hospital.
Matthew Smithers was treated by doctors and nurses for more than a week at Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Pinelands.
The 20-year-old sustained multiple lacerations to his lower limbs after he was attacked by a shark while surfing earlier this month.
Doctor Bradley David says Smithers is on the road to making a full recovery.
"From a medical point of view, he is exceptionally lucky that he sustained such minor injuries considering what it could have been. He could have lost his legs. From a psychological point of view, he will have some elements of post-traumatic stress issues."
The incident took place when the shark siren was in the process of being activated.
Shark Spotters and law enforcement officers then closed Muizenberg Beach.
