PRETORIA - Murder accused Oscar Pistorius has reached out to his supporters with a message thanking them for being there just hours after his defence team concluded presenting its closing arguments.

Pistorius will know his fate on 11 September when Judge Thokozile Masipa will deliver her judgment in the High Court in Pretoria.

The Paralympian and Olympian athlete's defence team asked that he be acquitted for accidentally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp but the state wants him convicted of premeditated murder.

Not long after leaving court, Pistorius tweeted: "Thank you to my loved ones and those that have been there for me, who have picked me up and helped me through everything."

The response was immediate, with hundreds of supporters wishing the athlete well but there were also the detractors, hurling abuse at him.

But when Nikkie Gillespie, from Northern Ireland told one of the trolls off, Pistorius thanked her in a private message that Eyewitness News has seen.

The Blade Runner told Gillespie: "Don't worry about those that have their own difficulties and pain. Forgive them anyway, I appreciate you."

Yesterday morning before the defence started presenting its closing arguments, Pistorius's uncle Arnold tweeted: "As light destroys darkness, truth will destroy the evil."
