East Rand boy (3) feared kidnapped
The boy was last seen on Thursday in the company of an unknown man.
JOHANNESBURG - A three-year-old boy from the Ramaphosa informal settlement near Reiger Park on Gauteng's East Rand has reportedly been kidnapped.
The boy was last seen in the company of an unknown man yesterday but police say he went missing near his home on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Kwenzakwakhe Ngobese says a case of kidnapping is being investigated.
"The boy was reported missing at the Reiger Park police station. There was information that the child has been seen around the area with someone. A kidnapping case has been opened and is under investigation."
The incident comes in the wake of a statement made yesterday by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko expressing concern over a spike in crimes targeting children and the elderly.
Three-year-old Luke Tibbetts remains on life support in hospital after being shot in the head by a stray bullet while sitting on his mother's lap at the back of a vehicle transporting them on Saturday in a suspected gang-related incident.
Meanwhile, Bronkhorstspruit police are still searching for those responsible for kidnapping five-year-old Mongezi Phike last month during a hijacking.
The hijackers held the child captive for five days, then dumped him on the streets of Johannesburg before he was taken to a children's home.
