JOHANNESBURG - Three-year-old Luke Tibbetts has passed away, his family confirmed on Friday afternoon.

Tibbetts was shot in the head by a stray bullet while sitting on his mother's lap at the back of a vehicle transporting them in Westbury on Saturday in a suspected gang-related incident.

The incident sparked widespread outrage across the country and has prompted calls for harsher penalties to be taken against those who commit crimes against children.

Luke's uncle Llewellyn Valentine earlier confirmed that the three-year old boy had died.

He said no machines were switched off and says the toddler died while on life support.

Valentine said the family had an opportunity to be at his bedside when he died.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting - Lindray Khaku and Keenan Mokwena.

Mokwena was arrested on Wednesday following police investigations and statements implicating him.

He appeared briefly in the Newlands Magistrates Court on Thursday but was not charged with attempted murder as expected, but with pointing a firearm.

Mokwena maintains he is innocent and claims the bullet which wounded Tibbetts was meant for him.

Khakhu was arrested on Sunday and charged with two counts of attempted murder on Tuesday.

Both accused will be back in court next week but will appear separately.

The incident comes just three weeks after the death of four-year-old Taegrin Morris who was killed in a hijacking in Boksburg after he was dragged behind his parents' hijacked car.
