JOHANNESBURG - The Public Protector's office says Advocate Thuli Madonsela has subpoenaed Communications Minister Faith Muthambi as part of her investigation into South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Chief Operations Officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng, after trying several times to get her to give evidence voluntarily.

The Public Protector's office has confirmed Madonsela has subpoenaed Muthambi, to explain how and why Motsoeneng was permanently appointed despite her previous findings that he abused his position and raised his own salary three times in one year.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is now challenging Motsoeneng's appointment in court, saying it is proof that Muthambi is trying to use the SABC to support the African National Congress (ANC).

Madonsela's spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi says they tried several times to get evidence from the communications minister.

"The minister responded, saying she would not avail herself to meet with the Public Protector because the matter is the subject of a court process."
