JOHANNESBURG - Platinum Stars beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 yesterday to advance to the last four of the tournament.

Goals from Vuyo Mere and Ndumiso Mabena had given Stars a 2-0 lead at half time before Teko Modise's goal 15 minutes from time made for a tense finish.

For Stars, coach Alan Freese admitted that the result and performance was exactly what he had sent his team out to do.

Orlando Pirates are also through to the last four after beating SuperSport United 2-1.

First-half goals from Daine Klate and Kermit Erasmus proved enough for Pirates, while David Mathebula pulled back a goal for the visitors.

Pirates and Stars now join Bidvest Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic in the semi-finals of the competition.

Today Kaizer Chiefs take on Black Aces at the FNB Stadium. Kick-off is at 3pm.
