JOHANNESBURG - The NGO People Opposing Women Abuse ( Powa) says too often women withdraw domestic abuse cases.

They say women frequently pull back cases due to intimidation, manipulation or a lack of trust in the criminal justice system.

August marks National Women's Month.

The organisation says gender-based violence is one of South Africa's major challenges.

Powa's Tiny Moloko says prosecution rates of domestic violence cases should be increased.

"We are encouraging them to use organisations. Nobody's above the law. We have had successful cases where police officers have been prosecuted.
