Morula Sun Casino to relocate to PTA East
Gauteng Gambling Board has granted Sun International rights to relocate the Morula Sun Casino.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Gambling Board has granted Sun International the rights to officially relocate the struggling Morula Sun Casino and Hotel from Mabopane to Pretoria East.
The proposal was met with fierce opposition from church and civil rights groups, despite the numerous economic spinoffs promised.
The land on which Sun International wants to relocate the casino is already zoned for construction.
Chairperson of the Gauteng Gambling Board Prince Mafojane says Sun International made a compelling case for the relocation of the Morula Sun Casino.
"In terms of the case studies that they had done, the impact in the community and other factors, we took into account."
Civil society groups had opposed the relocation because the development will be behind a school.
Michael, a man from the Hatfield Christian Church, says he is disappointed with the ruling.
"We respect the decision. From what we can understand there is no way for us at this point to challenge it. Once the gambling board has ruled, it's a done deal."
Sun International has been unavailable for comment and it's still unclear when the relocation will start.
