CAPE TOWN - A new disturbing trend on social media called #FireChallenge has grabbed many a concerned parent's attention.

Videos of teens dousing themselves in alcohol, setting themselves alight and then jumping into a bath or shower are being posted on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Vine and Instagram.

In some instances the 'challenge' has gone horribly wrong and several children have been injured or worse.

Some of these videos have even gone viral.

The STUPID things teens do..let's find something better to do with our time #firechallenge Gone Wrong😂😂😭🔥🔥 https://t.co/2sqYPJ53iP""

Hey kids/ #teens, the #FireChallenge is an incredibly stupid thing to do. Fire burns. Don't be an idiot. pic.twitter.com/ceVEXUTLbm

The #FireChallenge follows a line of similarly dangerous contests shared online, including #C innamonChallenge and the # NekNomination drinking game in which a person films him or herself downing an alcoholic beverage, posts the footage on a social media site and then nominates another person to do the same.

The #NekNomination challenge became concerning when some participants mixed different alcoholic spirits with sometimes harmful substances, resulting the deaths of more than two people.

Some people have taken to using the #firechallenge hashtag to express disgust and repulsion at this dangerous experiment.

I think the #FireChallenge is mad stupid.

This #FireChallenge 💩 Is Stupid. 😒😒

I take it back.. All you people stupid enough to do the #FireChallenge, keep on going. We don't need your dumbass on this earth anyway.

For the lulz.. #FireChallenge lol. I can't believe people actually set themselves on fire.... dumbasses. pic.twitter.com/0jENN340ry

#LetsTalkAboutIt: For ALL you people participating in this #firechallenge, PLEASE be smarter than that! You're risking LIFE for likes? Cmon!

Social media site Facebook is reportedly deleting all #FireChallenge related videos from its website.
