Cango Caves fraud probed

CAPE TOWN - The Oudtshoorn municipality says the R16 million transferred from the Cango Caves trust accounts into its coffers' has been earmarked for a major refurbishing of the caves.

The upgrades are due to take place during this financial year.

Rumours are however swirling the money was abused.

An investigation is now expected to be conducted.

Municipal spokesperson Ntobeko Mangquenkwewe says the municipality will give its full support to the investigation processes.

"We'll give the necessary support to any investigation. As for the R16 million, the 2014-2015 budget makes provision for the upgrading and hence that transfer from Cango Caves to municipality."

Meanwhile, Western Cape MEC for Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell said allegations relating to the abuse of funds by the municipality are serious.
