CAPE TOWN - Allegations relating to the abuse of funds by the Oudtshoorn Local Municipality are serious, Western Cape MEC for Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell said on Tuesday.

Millions of rands allocated for the upkeep and development of the Cango Caves was reported to have been transferred to municipal coffers.

A probe into the matter is underway.

Bredell says the claims are worrying.

"We have put in in writing to the Outshoorn Municipality, and I will respond once they have responded. It's important that we work on the facts. It's important that people know we will investigate every single rumour."
