Boy (12) killed in Woodstock apartment fire
The child was home alone when the fire broke out at the Harbour View flats on Sunday.
CAPE TOWN - A Woodstock building manager says he was unaware a child was home when a fire broke out at a block of flats in the area.
The City of Cape Town's fire and rescue service says the blaze that claimed a child's life broke out at the Harbour View flats on Sunday night.
Police are now investigating the incident.
The smell of smoke still hangs in the air and the blackened door to flat 116 is cordoned off.
Building manager Raymond Whittles says the 12-year-old boy was apparently alone at home when the fire broke out.
He says despite his efforts, he could not open the door.
"When I got to the first floor I saw there was smoke coming out and I tried to open the door but couldn't. It was too dangerous. I tried three times but it was hectic, too dangerous for me to open it."
Fire and rescue services say fire fighters struggled for nearly half an hour to extinguish the blaze.
