JOHANNESBURG - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi says she obtained independent legal opinion before ratifying the permanent appointment of South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Chief Operating Officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Muthambi has confirmed that she's opposing the Democratic Alliance's (DA) court bid to have the decision reviewed and set aside.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela in February found that Motsoeneng misrepresented his qualifications, increased his salary from R1.5 million to R2.4 million in one year and got rid of senior staff.

She recommended that he be replaced within 90 days.

Muthambi has refused to disclose the grounds on which she'll oppose the DA's court challenge.

"It's unfair to me also to ask that question so let's respect the fact that the matter is sub judice."

The DA says it believes the decision to appoint Motsoeneng was irrational and unlawful.

The party added it is looking forward to hearing the minister's arguments when the matter comes before the court on 19 August.
