CAPE TOWN - President Jacob Zuma has been urged to lead or step aside by Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane.

Maimane has lashed Zuma for failing to provide strong leadership at a time when the country faces enormous challenges.

"Mr President, lead or step aside."

Maimane was speaking during the presidency's budget vote debate in Parliament on Wednesday.

He urged Zuma to take tough decisions even if they were unpopular with the ANC alliance partners.

"True leadership is really about not pleasing your comrades or being popular. It's about choosing a way that suits the people of this country."

Maimane also tackled Zuma on his failure to so far fully respond to the Public Protestor's report on the upgrades to his Nkandla home.

Other opposition parties also raised Nkandla and Zuma is due to reply today.
