CAPE TOWN - The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Thursday said it's deciding the fate of 15,000 abalone confiscated this week.

Police confirmed they seized an estimated 8,000 abalone in Buffelsjags Bay near Gansbaai.

Officials later confiscated hidden sacks of abalone in the Overberg fishing community.

The department's Lionel Adendorf says the abalone needs to be assessed.

"We need to value the abalone and determine its quality and from that point we will make a determination of whether we will discard it or whether we will sell it on action."
