CAPE TOWN - The Public Protector's office on Wednesday said it will do everything it can to get to the bottom of a scandal involving former President Nelson Mandela's funeral.

Several high-profile politicians in the Eastern Cape, including Buffalo City Municipality Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha and Premier Phumulo Masualle, have been implicated in the debacle.

The allegations relate to the procurement of service providers for Mandela's memorial services and funeral.

The Democratic Allance (DA's) Athol Trollip has welcomed the probe.

"The DA is delighted that the Public Protector's office is investigating irregular expenditure of millions in the name of Nelson Mandela."

Trollip says the party is concerned about an aspect to the irregular expenditure.
