Dead Amcu member was named by Mr X
Amcu branch secretary Bongani Bhayi Mehlonkomo was gunned down on his way home from work.
JOHANNESBURG - Advocate Dali Mpofu has confirmed that the miner who was shot dead in Marikana yesterday was one of the men named by police witness Mr X.
Several miners have been killed in the Rustenburg area, most of them during the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu)'s five month strike which ended last month.
The police witness only known as Mr X, has been testifying against his colleagues at the Marikana Commission of Inquiry, saying miners were responsible for several murders and planned to kill police during the violent strike in August 2012.
Mpofu says the Amcu branch secretary Bongani Bhayi Mehlonkomo was gunned down on his way home from work.
The advocate, who is representing the miners at the commission, says his clients now fear for their lives because Mr X has implicated them in several crimes.
The police witness named Mehlonkomo as one of the people who were involved in the murders at Marikana in the days leading up to the shooting.
Mpofu says this is very concerning.
Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the Amcu official and no arrests have been made yet.
Earlier Amcu called for the killings on the platinum belt to stop and for officers to act swiftly.
The union's Jimmy Gama called on its members not to take the law into their own hands.
