CAPE TOWN - The teacher-learner ratio in the Western Cape is set to be the lowest it has been in a decade.

The provincial education department has announced more than 670 new teaching posts will be put in place in the Cape from January 2015.

That means one teacher for every 34 learners.

The province's education MEC Debbie Schäfer says this increase will improve teaching quality.

"There'll be more teachers available to teach the learners that we have, which means they can get smaller classes. This makes it easier for the teachers and for them to give more attention to the learners."

Schools across the province reopen today following the winter break.
