Zuma: Operation Phakisa to accelerate NDP

JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma says the newly launched economic growth initiative Operation Phakisa will help accelerate the implementation of government policies and programmes.
Zuma says Operation Phakisa highlights the urgency with which government wants to deliver on some of its priorities as contained in the National Development Plan.
He launched the initiative in Durban earlier on Saturday.
Zuma says the operation will initially be implemented in the ocean economy and health.
He says in 2010 the ocean contributed approximately R54 billion to South Africa's gross domestic product and accounted for approximately R316,000 jobs.
He says the ocean has the potential the contribute up to R177 billion to gross domestic product. The ocean also has potential to contribute between R800 and R1 million direct jobs.
Zuma says four priority sectors have been selected as new growth areas in the ocean economy with the objective of growing them.
