JOHANNESBURG - Just hours before Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday, one of its passengers posted a picture of it on Facebook with the humorous caption, "In case it goes missing, here is what it looks like."

The Boeing 777 travelling from Amsterdam, Holland, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, crashed into a wheat field in a war-torn area of eastern Ukraine after 3pm after apparently being hit by a surface-to-air missile.

Blame for the attack has been placed largely at the feet of pro-Russian rebels in the area but Russia and the rebels have accused the Ukraine government in return.

Several investigations are now underway to determine the exact cause and perpetrator, with an international effort currently underway.

The photograph, taken by Dutchman Cor Pan, who is believed to be among those killed in the accident, was posted to his Facebook page shortly before the flight on Thursday.

The joke, which referred to the missing Malaysia Airways plane, flight MH370, read "Mocht hij verdwijnen, zo ziet hij d'r uit," which in Dutch, translated

into English reads "In case it goes missing, here is what it looks like."

Thousands of people have shared Pan's post across Facebook and over 160 comments have been posted by his friends mourning his loss.
