Arrests made after gang shooting
5 arrests were made after Jaylen Sculard (10) was shot dead during a gang shooting in Beacon Valley.
Jaylen Sculard died when he was hit by a stray bullet while playing with his cousin outside his Beacon Valley home on Tuesday night.
The police's Thembinkosi Kinana says the arrests were made on Wednesday following a tip off.
"Western Cape police arrested five men, aged between 20 and 31 years. Police received the information from the community members which resulted in a full-scale operation being conducted and led to the apprehension of the suspects."
The area has been a hotbed for gang shootings in recent weeks. Community members are calling for action from government.
Sculard's mother refused to speak to the media, saying she was too distraught.
Meanwhile, Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says he plans to make renewed calls for specialised gang and drug units to curb gang violence across the province.
He says this submission will be at the top of the agenda during his next meeting with Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko.
Four children have been shot in separate incidents, believed to be gang related, across the city this week alone.
Plato says gangsters are taking over the streets across the province.
"They get bail, they walk scot-free out of court and they just continue what are doing. And for that very reason I still believe specialised unit need to be brought back to deal with these gangs and drug problem."
Paramedics say they found the girl lying in a small pool of blood after being shot in the back.
Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital said the child underwent emergency surgery and was in a stable condition.
