New housing scheme for public servants
Govt says the scheme will help state employees secure finance so that they can buy homes.
CAPE TOWN - Public Service and Administration minister Collins Chabane on Thursday said his department is refining the details of a housing scheme for public servants.
The scheme will help state employees secure finance so that they can buy homes.
Chabane says the majority of public servants can't afford to buy their own homes.
He says the same employees don't qualify for government sponsored housing.
"We have this category of people, they have a housing subsidy but that doesn't translate into a house. Even the house markets themselves are not friendly."
Speaking ahead of his budget vote presentation in Parliament, he said a solution is in the works.
"Once we are done with the consultation, we will be at the point to implement."
Government has been talking to banks and will need buying from labour.
