CAPE TOWN - The Overberg District Municipality says a runaway fire in Betty's Bay has been extinguished.

The blaze broke out on the slopes of the Kogelbay mountain range on Thursday night and spread to a residential area.

It forced locals to evacuate their homes.

The municipality's Reinard Geldenhuys says two properties have been damaged but no injuries were reported.

"We are still keeping two vehicles in the area monitoring the situation and making sure everything is okay."
