CAPE TOWN - A five-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital after being shot in Wesbank near Delft.

ER24 says the girl was shot in the back and when the paramedic team arrived on the scene on Monday night, they found the young patient on the floor in a small pool of blood.

ER24's Gareth Staley says, "The paramedics performed advanced life support and the patient was transported to the Red Cross Children's Hospital for urgent medical care."

The police's Tembinkosi Kinana says officials are investigating.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently not known. However police have opened a case of attempted murder for investigation."

Last week, a one-year-old girl was discharged from hospital after she was wounded in gang crossfire in the same area.

She was admitted to the health facility following a drive-by shooting earlier this month.

The toddler was in her mother's arms while walking to a nearby shop when the incident occurred.
