CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer says the N2 Highway to and from the Cape Town International Airport has become notorious for incidents such as armed robberies.

Last week, a South African Airways (SAA) pilot narrowly escaped when he became the target of an attempted robbery on the highway.

His vehicle hit a large box on the road, but when he stopped to assess the damage, he noticed several men approaching.

Earlier this month an airport employee was robbed in the same way.

Lamoer says the N2 is a problem route.

"That stretch of road is notorious, that's the reason we had the barriers built there some years ago. Our problem is that the fencing along the N2 has been broken down by communities staying along that road."

Meanwhile, Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has warned travellers to be vigilant on that route.

Earlier this month an airport employee was robbed in the same way.

Acsa's Deidre Hendricks says, "It is a concern to the airport team and requires a strong collective response. We urge motorists to be alert when driving, especially at night."
