SA sectors still struggling after recession
New Stats SA figures show the extent to which mining & manufacturing sectors suffered since 2009’s recession.
CAPE TOWN - New Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) figures show the extent to which South Africa's mining and manufacturing sectors have suffered since the 2009 recession.
South Africa's mining industry contracted by 24.7 percent in the first quarter of this year.
Statistician General Pali Lehohla says South Africa's also struggled to fully recover from the 2009 recession.
"That recession has been followed by a fast contraction in the first quarter of 2014."
Between September 2006 and March this year, 188,000 lost their jobs in the manufacturing sector.
Meanwhile, the mining workforce decreased by 9 percent from June 2012.
