JOHANNESBURG - A 67 blanket knit-a-thon challenge is being held at Nelson Mandela Square today.

To celebrate Nelson Mandela Day, the charity drive has called on people to join them this afternoon to create blankets for those less fortunate.

Mandela Day is celebrated each year on the 18 July and encourages people to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to doing something good for others.

The organisation's Carolyn Steyn says, "It's going to be absolutely incredible. About two months ago, we laid blankets at Madiba's feet at the statue at Mandela Square and it was so successful that Sandton City management approached me."

This year's Mandela Day will be the first one without the global icon.

The former president passed away in December at the age of 95.
