De Lille: City not responsible for rains
Garden Village residents demanded suitable land to build houses after recent rains caused floods.
CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille said the city cannot be held responsible for recent rains that caused flooding in informal settlements in Somerset West.
Residents of Garden Village are demanding suitable land to erect their dwellings as well as access to better services after recent rains caused flooding in the area.
They clashed with police on several occasions this week with police firing rubber bullets.
About 70 residents, including 25 babies have been placed in a local hall as temporary shelter.
De Lille said residents cannot blame the city.
"It's clear that the area has been badly flooded because even people living in proper structures have been affected."
She added they need to work together to find a solution.
"We need to find ways to address at a humanitarian level."
