JOHANNESBURG - There is an increase in the number of rhino poached across the country, the Department of Environmental Affairs said on Thursday.

The department added that it has managed to return stability to areas that were considered hotspots in the past.

A total of 558 rhino have already been killed for their horns this year with 157 people arrested.

The department says the majority of the incidents have once again taken place in the Kruger National Park with 351 rhino killed.

Millions of rands have already been invested in heightening security.

The department's Albi Modise says the department is monitoring the situation on a national level.

"We are also upping our efforts at the Kruger National Park."
